Goodbye April showers. This photographic project by New York-based artist Eric Cahan – entitled Sky Series – is luminous, vibrant, and completely inspiring, showing the awe that mother nature can and always will provoke in man.

The series documents vivid sunrises and sunsets from various locations, and features an almost supernatural palette of jewel colours. The works show Cahan’s preoccupation with light – especially when at its weakest and most magical moments of the day.

The works are inherently romantic and have a nostalgic quality to them, provoking in us all a sense of daydream-like reminiscence about those perfect sunrises and sunsets we’ve all witnessed, if only momentarily. His works document a specific time and location, and yet they’re timeless and placeless because of their ephemeral nature.

‘During my travels, I discover what I want to document. My works are titled to remind me of the experience, both visually and spiritually,’ Cahan explains. ‘My mission is to capture light. Light is the true subject of this series: its constant mystery, the way it shifts and colors everything around it in nature.’ Beautifully put.

Finnbogi Pétursson, Reset (2011)

My favourite kind of art is that which makes us think about the natural environment and the elements; works that combine art and life. Finnbogi Pétursson- from Iceland – does just that. He creates video works that feature the textures and forms created by water. Fusing sound and water with sculpture and digital media, his projects often evoke the patterns and forms of the natural world.

In Circle, for example, he installed large loudspeakers suspended over a darkened pit that was filled with water; the sound wave rippled the surface of the water at regular intervals and created a sense of motion, a still yet reliably repetitive pattern. These shapes were then reflected onto the wall by a projector, which literally visualised the sound coming out of the speakers, turning sound into form and water into art.

Pétursson’s work transforms primary materials – sound and water – into sculptural elements – and asks us to reimagine what might constitute ‘scultpure’ itself. Not confined to the strictly three-dimensional, Pétursson’s works throw certain media into new perspectives by incorporating them into the sculptural sphere, reflecting their patterns and qualities onto different surfaces.

The Watertanks, Water-Earth

Georgian-born, Berlin-based photographer Eka Sharashidze creates intricately detailed and almost obsessively repetitive photo collages.For this project, entitled Wall People, Sharshidze photographed everyday passers-by and combined them together in rows and sequences, often repeating one person several times to create an image that begs to be analysed in detail in order to be appreciated in its entirety. The people walking, biking and standing conversing have been frozen in movement, their journeys captured on camera in a temporary freeze-frame of artificial encounters whilst they continue onwards in real life.

This video gives a whistle-stop tour around the world – a condensed version of artist and photographer Kien Lam‘s year-long trip around the globe. With his camera in hand the artist captured over 6,000 photographs that combine to make this short film.

German designer Valentin Loellmann has created this series of furniture called m.&mme. The series features long, elegant yet fragile legs that at first glance might remind you of the work of Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti.

And indeed Leollmann acknowledges the sculptural quality of his designs: ’On the composition and treatment of materials in my work I am treating materials like living organisms [...] A piece of wood is not mere material substance. in my creative vision and practice, it represents the opportunity to merge with other elements [...] The fusion of the various components stamps the final work piece with its unique character.’

Each work is unique and reflects the variations that occur in the process of being shaped into existence. Expressive and gestural, these pieces have life-like qualities, as if they have the ability to walk away themselves.

Annica Cuppetelli & Cristobal Mendoza, Nervous Structure (2011)

Interactive projected sculpture? I need more of this in my life. This particular piece is called Nervous Structure (Field), and was recently completed by Annica Cuppetelli and Cristobal Mendoza. It consists of a structure of 144 vertical lines made of elastic, which are hung up and illuminated by a video projector. As the viewer moves in front of the structure their motions affect the projections, creating a rippling effect.

Cuppetelli and Mendoze, from the United States and Venezuela respectively, create site-specific, multimedia installations that ‘address issues of space, interaction, and materiality,’ they say. This work is immersive; it beckons you to interact with it and determine its nature.

Paul Cocksedge, a London-based designer, was commissioned to make this ‘caught in the wind’ sculpture for the city of Lyon’s annual Festival of Lights (ended 11 December 2011). Bourrasque, as it is called, resembles pieces of paper fleetingly caught in the breeze, and engulfed the 25m long courtyard of the Hotel de Ville in a frozen moment of drama and movement.

Cocksedge suspended 200 sheets of electrically conductive material that light up in the air. Each sheet was the size of a piece of A3 paper and was hand moulded.

The work brings attention to the 17th century courtyard, its expansive and enclosed space. It forces you to gaze up, across the length of the courtyard and appreciate the void as a three-dimensional space. The sculpture also makes us question to what extent light might be a three-dimensional entity, as it fluctuates and rises and fills the space of the courtyard.

Heather and Ivan Morison, Little Shining Man (2011)

Where sculpture meets design; Heather and Ivan Morison created this cube structure that flies just like a kite. The work, Little Shining Man, is made from over 23,000 individual components that are themselves made from carbon-fibre rods, which are extremely light in nature and allow it to fly freely. The work was constructed entirely by hand and took over 16 months to complete. The pair took inspiration from the tetra kites of Alexander Graham Bell; a title cellular structural arrangement.

This work might be considered a piece of object-based performance art since it is exhibited as a sculpture that flies at the Castle Quay development in St Helier, Jersey. It therefore carries with it a sense of duration and movement. The work also carries with it an unusual anti-gravitational effect, as it appears to float in the air in spite of its weight.

‘Little Shining Man is a sculpture that has the potential for flight,’ say the artists. ‘A double wing module has been duplicated and arranged into a tight cellular structural arrangement that appears as a heavy, un-flyable mass. Utilising lightweight materials and the symmetry of the module and composition, it is able to fly freely and steadily.’

Beijing-based photographer Jeremy O’Sullivan combines photographs and seeks out unique angles to create juxtapositions that are as carefully composed as they are unexpectedly random. 

Zander Olsen, No Mans Land (2004)

Photographer Zander Olsen has created this remarkable ongoing project entitled Tree, Line. The constructed photographs show trees in forests in Surrey, Hampshire and Wales, which have been intervened with to create site-specific (or even viewpoint-specific) artworks. Olsen wrapped the trees in white material to create a visual relationship between the trees and their surrounding landscape, mimicking the horizon lines or edges of mountains.
